Tonight, while Amity went out to dinner with some of her girlfriends, Maelyn asked me if we could play a game of Candy Land. It had only been a couple weeks since I first introduced the game to her and already she is a huge fan. It didn’t take her long either to figure out the whole candy thing. She wants them all especially her two favorites, ice cream cone and popsicle, which just so happen to be the two closest to the finish. In fact, about the third time we played Maelyn asked me to set up the cards and as she went first (as she always does), the ice cream card just happened to be the top card. I was like wow; it doesn’t take long for a 2 ½ year old to figure out how to rig a game.
Anyways back to tonight. We are playing along and no candy cards have come out as of yet. Maelyn has already let it be known to Tristyn in me in her own words that “I want the ice cream cone”. Tristyn being a good, big sister agrees with me that we’ll let her have it if we get it. Well she actually draws the ice cream cone card herself and is so proud and happy, she moves right to the front, thoroughly ready to finish off her dad and sister and win going away.
It was only when her next turn came around and she has to move off of ice cream cone, toward the finish line, that she starts to complain and say in her sad little voice “I love ice cream cone, I don't want to move”. Obviously, this makes big sister happy and she quickly agrees that we will just skip her turn and let her stay on ice cream cone. All is good until sister draws her next favorite candy card, popsicle. Maelyn immediately grabs the card and attempts to move to the popsicle spot. After getting it worked out, we agree that Tristyn and Maelyn can trade spots. However, after one turn, Maelyn decides you know what I miss ice cream cone and immediately wants her spot back. It was hilarious, she had us laughing. Anyway, she did teach us one thing tonight, playing games is not just about winning, its about having fun (or at least getting the ice cream cone) too.
